Bamboo – Bamboo has been around for quite some time but lately we have seen an outbreak of new colors and styles, looking more and more like hardwood. Did you know that bamboo is 13 percent harder than maple and 27 percent harder than northern red oak? It’s true. It also lasts longer and can withstand more use than conventional hardwood floors. Bamboo floors are naturally resistant to water, mildew, and insects. Bamboo grows rapidly and cutting the tree does not kill the plant. In fact, each tree is harvested approximately every 4 years.
CARPET
Polyester Carpet – Polyester carpet is another sustainable floor to consider. It is made from recycled plastic bottles (approximately 25% of the carpet) – for every plastic bottle that is used to create this carpet there is one less sitting in our landfills. There are several benefits to this carpet; it is durable, stain resistant and comes in a variety of colors, styles and patterns.
Wool Carpet – Wool has always set the bar for fine carpets. It is soft and luxurious, it holds its shape and lasts longer than any other carpet. It can last 50 years or more if properly cared for. Wool is naturally dirt resistant and flame-retardant, it is biodegradable and compostable. Although wool carpets are the better choice, please keep in mind a few things. Wool carpet is the more expensive option and it may not be the optimal choice for families with small children. If some spills are not cleaned up immediately it can permanently stain your carpet. But by far, the qualities of the wool carpet outweigh the cost. The qualities do, by far, out weigh the cost.
Cork – Although softwoods are rarely considered ideal flooring material, cork is an excellent choice for many reasons.
- It’s natural elasticity makes cork floors especially comfortable.
- Cork provides thermal and acoustic insulation.
- This durable floor recovers well from marks left by furniture or high heels.
- It is hypo-allergenic, does not attract dust and best of all it is fire-resistant.
Linoleum – Vinyl floors are often confused with linoleum, however, these two floors couldn’t be more different. Linoleum is made almost entirely with natural materials (linseed oil, recycled wood flour, cork dust and limestone) and is a low VOC emitter. While linoleum floors often outgas a strong odor during and after installation (due to the linseed oil)) it is harmless and will dissipate after a few weeks. Linoleum is naturally antibacterial and biodegradable. It most commonly comes in sheets but is also available in tiles for additional design elements.
Low VOC Vinyl – When it comes to flooring, Vinyl is a good seller but there are some concerns about this floor. When it is newly installed it can omit volatile organic compounds, called VOC’s. These substances may be linked to health problems and pollution. Consider low VOC vinyl flooring manufactured by Tarkett and you can rest assured that you have taken a step towards maintaining, and possibly even improving your family’s health. A great alternative.
Rubber – Rubber flooring is most popular in gyms and basements but is slowly finding its way in kitchens, sunrooms and bathrooms. It is made from recycled tires and is a versatile, beautiful, lasting option. It is water resistant and is great to walk on.
Tile – Green is not just a color anymore, green is symbolic for eco friendly materials. When you purchase ceramic or porcelain tile, you are buying one of the most eco-friendly types of flooring. It is green because of its durability. Tile, especially porcelain, can last a lifetime if installed and maintained properly.
Ceramics are made from 100% natural materials and does not absorb or emit pollutants. Tile can be cleaned by just using warm water and a ph-neutral cleanser. There is no need to use harsh chemicals to get them clean.
